Resources  /  Light and Optics Exploration Kit

LASER-TEC’s Light and Optics Exploration Kit is a versatile, complete, and low-cost solution to introduce your students to the fundamentals of light, lasers, fiber optics, and their 21st century applications.

The kit supports 15 demonstrations and can be used for both K-12 and colleges classes.

The Light and Optics Exploration Kit includes all necessary tools and materials, lesson plans, and access to electronic resources.

Each Light and Optics Exploration Kit includes one printed copy of the Demonstration Lesson Plans. Additional copies can be purchased through the LASER-TEC online store.

The demonstration lesson plans include estimated demonstration time, list of materials, learning objectives, essential theory, technology applications, detailed step-by-step procedures, images and videos to help educators set up and conduct a demonstration, diagrams for a free download, assessment, answer keys, and recommendations for further reading. Each lesson plan contains a cross-reference to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

The step-by-step instructions ensure that both educators and students develop confidence and understanding of principles of light and optics.

Example of the Step-by-step Procedure

  1. The Light and Optics Exploration Kit is equipped with class III laser pointer operating at wavelength 532 nm ±10 with power output less than 5 mW.
  2. When using a laser pointer, always follow the laser safety rules:
    1. Never intentionally stare into the laser beam.
    2. The laser beam should never be intentionally directed toward oneself or directed toward another person. The beam should be directed towards the screen and directed away from the audience.
    3. The beam should be turned off when not in immediate use.
    4. Mirror like surfaces (such as glass, metal and other highly reflective materials) should be avoided when directing the laser beam.
  3. Class III laser pointer use is prohibited when optically aided viewing of the beam is probable. Optical aids include telescopes, binoculars, viewing optics, and similar devices.
  4. The willful misuse of a laser pointer can be considered either a misdemeanor or a felony. In particular, directing any laser beam at an aircraft may constitute malicious mischief. Persons convicted of these crimes may be subject to fines and/or jail sentences.
  5. Never leave minors unattended with a laser pointer.
  6. Do not disassemble the laser pointer. The laser pointer is equipped with an IR filter, if damaged or misplaced, exposure to IR can result in temporary or permanent eye damage.
  7. The user of a kit assumes sole responsibility for the proper use of the laser pointer and releases LASER-TEC from any and all liabilities that may arise from improper use of the laser pointer.
